1. What do you enjoy most about interior decorating?
There is so much to enjoy! I think my favorite part about it is that I get to express my creativity every day, as a job. That's a pretty sweet thing.
2. What was the goal for your design?
Right now, I am really into sculptural elements contrasted with soft textures- particularly pottery. I just think that in addition to serving as beautiful vessels for fresh flowers or greenery, they also look beautiful and make a statement empty in a collection on a shelf or table. I have been put on a ceramics ban by my husband, but that's not going so well.
5. How would you describe your style?
I like to think my style is a fresh take on traditional with a feminine bend and a quirky edge.
6. Where do you go to get new ideas and inspiration?
I'm lucky enough to live in Washington, DC, where the museums and the architecture are all around are so, so beautiful. I'm the most inspired by beautiful textures and architecture or pieces that are found in unexpected places- one of my favorite things in the city are the air return vents at the National Gallery.
7. How would you sum up your aesthetic?
Collected, airy, odd.
8. Whats the most treasured item in your home?
I am absolutely in love with this marble fireplace mantel that I found on Craigslist. It's huge, and black marble with stark white veining. Someone didn't know what they had, and listed it on Craigslist for $50 and some elbow grease. I showed up 30 minutes later with a screwdriver and staked my claim, and I plan to rip it out and bring it to every home I live in.
9. Bold hues or subtle neutrals?
I will always lean more towards subtle neutrals, because I think they are more challenging. It's easier to throw bold colors together to make a statement, but making something subtle beautiful is so challenging and fun. And the end result is sophisticated and timeless.
10. What the best piece of advice you can give someone about decorating?
Remember scale! I would argue that the scale of an item is more important than the style of it. That doesn't mean that everything needs to be huge, but keep in mind proportions- it's what makes a good design great!
